Kite surfer uses rocks to spell out ‘HELP’ in sand to prompt rescue at California beach

A kite surfer was rescued from a Bay Area beach on Sunday after a private helicopter spotted him throwing rocks onto the sand and pleading for help, according to Cal Fire’s San Mateo-Santa Cruz Division.

Video shared by CAL FIRE CZU on X shows a kitesurfer being rescued after becoming stranded on the beach south of Davenport Landing.

The surfers wrote the word “HELP” using stones on the beach, which was spotted by a civilian helicopter and called for help.

Cal Fire released video of the rescue effort, showing a helicopter hoisting the kitesurfer to safety.

The department praised Cal Fire’s San Mateo and Santa Cruz units, a helicopter from the department’s Santa Clara unit, the Santa Cruz County Fire Department and California State Parks for working together to complete the rescue operation.

Cal Fire said the beach was somewhat remote and difficult to access, plus there was a high tide.

Authorities said the surfer did not require medical attention and just needed help getting off the beach.

It is unclear how long the unidentified kite surfer was stranded on the beach before being rescued.
