Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) stood up for her party’s decision to request the federal government publish documents regarding convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, noting that most Democrats have been relatively quiet on the issue during former President Biden’s tenure.
During an interview with Jake Tupper on CNN’s “coalition status,” Klobuchar took issue with President Trump’s attempts to shift blame onto Democrats regarding the situation.
“Jake, the president is pointing fingers at Democrats for this issue, almost like a CEO trying to deflect criticism,” Klobuchar remarked.
“He was in charge when Epstein faced these charges and went to prison. He was also the president when Epstein took his own life. While there were other occurrences during Biden’s presidency, Trump was at the helm then,” she elaborated.
Klobuchar further noted that the promise to release the documents originated from the Trump administration, mentioning Attorney General Pam Bondy’s involvement. She referred to this release as the “first phase” of Epstein’s previously confidential files.
The senator highlighted that Democrats are more focused on substantial issues than their Republican counterparts.
“I find it frustrating that this blame is directed at Democrats. This seems to serve right-wing agendas and certain Congress members,” she commented.
“There’s a reason the public is eager to see these documents. They trust the president’s assertion that there’s something significant, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. These are not merely wild progressive claims; the public deserves access to this information,” she added.
On his social media platform, Trump questioned why Democrats didn’t release documents linked to Epstein while they held control of the Senate and the presidency.
“If Epstein had something incriminating, why did they keep that ‘file’ under wraps for four years? [Former Attorney General Merrick] Garland and [ex-prosecutor Maureen] Comey should have used it,” Trump remarked.
He continued, “Because they had nothing!!!”
Previously, Trump directed Bondi to release certain testimonies related to the Epstein case. This order elicited mixed reactions and put pressure on both Trump supporters and Democrats to push for further transparency regarding the investigation.
