Knicks' coaching search poised for a significant shift towards Jason Kidd, according to NBA expert

The Knicks are actively considering their coaching search after Tom Thibodeau’s unexpected departure.

Reports suggest the Knicks will officially request permission soon to speak with current Mavericks coaches, including Jason Kidd. This was noted by veteran NBA reporter Mark Stein.

Kidd wrapped up his NBA playing career with the Knicks during a successful 54-win season under Mike Woodson back in 2012-13. He led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals last year.

Interestingly, Kidd’s first year coaching the Mavs coincided with the last season Jalen Brunson played for Dallas. After Brunson signed as a free agent in 2022, they developed a solid rapport, eventually leading to his rise as a two-time All-Star point guard.

Although the Mavericks missed the playoffs this year following a trade of superstar guard Luka Doncic to the Lakers in February, they did secure the No. 1 overall pick in the lottery, which is anticipated to be Duke’s Cooper Flag.

Kidd began his coaching journey after retiring as a player in the 2013-14 season. His initial stint was with Brooklyn, but he only lasted a season there before moving to the Bucks.

The Nets received two second-round draft picks as compensation for Kidd’s move to Milwaukee.

During his time as the Bucks’ head coach, he worked closely with Giannis Antetokounmpo and compiled a record of 139-152 before parting ways in the 2017-18 season.

After serving as an assistant for the Lakers, Kidd found his way to Dallas in 2021, taking over from Rick Carlisle, who recently guided the Pacers to the finals. Currently, Kidd’s career coaching record stands at .516, with a postseason mark of 31-33.

Last May, Kidd signed a two-year extension with the Mavericks, keeping him under contract through 2026-27, amid speculation that the Lakers were interested in him for their head coaching position.

Interestingly, he was also a candidate for the Knicks’ head coach position back in 2020 before Thibodeau was appointed.

ESPN Insider Tim McMahon mentioned this week that if the Knicks show interest, Kidd would definitely take notice, although he noted that he wouldn’t rule out any possibilities.

Following their recent playoff run—where they lost to Indiana in the Eastern Conference Finals—team president Leon Rose has taken swift action regarding Thibodeau’s exit.

Other candidates linked to the Knicks include former associate coach Johnny Bryant. Meanwhile, there are reports that the Knicks may seek permission to discuss the head coach position with Houston’s Ime Udoka, but the Rockets are expected to quickly deny that request.
