Knicks faced communication problems once more in disappointing Game 1 defeat

Knicks’ Communication Issues Persist Amid Playoff Struggles

The challenges definitely aren’t fading away. They seem poised to haunt the Knicks.

It’s becoming a familiar refrain.

“We eased off a bit, and then we stopped communicating with each other. It resulted in some misunderstandings,” Mikal Bridges mentioned on Thursday. “Aaron Nesmith hit several key shots, but we made it easy for him—didn’t challenge him enough. He got hot, and we, well, misread some things.”

This lack of communication has been a recurring issue throughout the playoffs, despite numerous attempts at resolution. It was particularly evident during the Knicks’ fourth-quarter meltdown, losing 138-135 in overtime in Game 1 at Madison Square Garden.

Nesmith nailed six three-pointers in the final five minutes of the game. Four of those came from open looks as the Knicks failed to properly defend the pick-and-roll.

“Some of that was about secondary actions,” coach Tom Thibodeau stated Thursday. “The initial setups were fine, but the rescreening and being aware of our movements—that’s where we faltered. Understanding the transition was key.”

Interestingly, OG Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns appeared to miscommunicate at several points late in the game.

During one timeout, they even got into a spirited discussion on the bench. Jalen Brunson stepped in to mediate.

“They were just having a conversation,” Brunson noted about the incident on Thursday.

Knicks Adjustments and the Importance of Communication

The Knicks have been toggling between various defensive strategies throughout the playoffs.

The relentless pace of the Pacers elevates the need for smooth communication when executing these strategies.

“We’re aware of our different types of coverage,” Bridges explained. “If everyone knows what we’re doing and one person goes off-script, it complicates things. We have to keep our heads clear throughout the game.”

It’s striking how often similar sentiments have been expressed in recent weeks, yet the results have remained inconsistent.
