New York City Celebrates Knicks’ First NBA Championship in 53 Years
After a 53-year wait, the New York Knicks finally clinched their first NBA championship, igniting enthusiastic celebrations throughout New York City. Thousands of fans filled the streets of Manhattan for a historic ticker-tape parade, transforming an ordinary Thursday into a festive day as the city honored its victorious team.
The Knicks raised their championship banner before kicking off the 2026-27 season, reminding everyone just how significant this title is for New Yorkers. For one family, the championship was so meaningful that it inspired them to name their firstborn son after the team.
Yvonne Gonzalez-Bradford and her husband Vance were expecting a baby when the Knicks triumphed over the San Antonio Spurs in five games during the NBA Finals this summer. This victory not only ended a long title drought but brought great joy to a city that had been waiting to celebrate for ages.
The momentous win led the Bradfords to a naming decision, and they ultimately chose Knickson Fyve Bradford. In an interview, they mentioned they had originally planned to name their son Prestige Wisdom, while a girl would have been named Lady Victoria. But the Knicks changed the game, so to speak.
“You know how when something goes so perfectly, you just don’t want to tempt fate?” Vance said. “I was just like, ‘Yep! Absolutely. That’s it!’”
Knickson was a unique first name, while Fyve referenced the “Knicks in Five” slogan that the fan base rallied around after the team won the championship in just five games. Knickson was born on August 8, weighing a healthy eight pounds and eight ounces, and interestingly, he shares a birthday with his mother.
Vance shared their desire for a strong name that would lead to a cool life, saying, “Knickson Fyve is definitely our motto, Knickson Fyve forever!” It’s also notable that the Bradfords have a deep connection to the Knicks—Vance’s mother worked as a scorekeeper for the 1972-73 Knicks team, which also won the NBA title that season, the last time until now that New York celebrated such a victory.
Jalen Brunson, the Finals MVP, addressed an emotional crowd at Madison Square Garden on opening night, expressing gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support throughout the playoffs.
Now, with his name linked to a significant moment in franchise history, Knickson Fyve Bradford will undoubtedly be a lifelong Knicks fan, with no choice in the matter.
