Carolina Hurricanes Celebrate Stanley Cup Win, But Owner’s Move Raises Eyebrows

The Carolina Hurricanes are enjoying a moment of triumph, having recently captured the Stanley Cup for the second time in their history. Yet, one decision made by the team’s owner has sparked considerable debate, particularly regarding the engraving on the coveted trophy itself.

It’s not unusual for an owner to have their name on the Cup, but Tom Dundon took it a step further by adding the names of his wife and children. This has raised questions, as while it’s not unheard of for family members to be included, it seems a bit controversial in this case.

Take, for instance, Oilers owner Peter Pocklington, who inscribed his father’s name in 1984. That name was later covered up because it wasn’t related to the championship. Similarly, Panthers owner Vincent Viola included family names after winning in 2025, and those names remain visible.

This trend, if it is indeed a trend, might not be well received moving forward. There’s something a bit unsettling about commemorating personal family ties on a trophy that represents a collective achievement. It’s tempting for an owner to want to share such a moment with their family, but, one has to wonder, what significance does it truly hold? After all, they didn’t put in the hard work to earn that win, and space on the Stanley Cup is limited.

In fact, some players’ names didn’t make it on the Cup this time around due to choices made, notably, as highlighted in various tweets. For example, Joel Nystrom, who participated in 38 regular-season games, was one who didn’t see his name engraved. The NHL’s rule states that a player needs to participate in at least 41 regular-season games or in a Stanley Cup Final game to get that honor, although teams can petition for exceptions.

On the flip side, owning the team certainly gives one the authority to make such decisions, but it raises another point: success takes time and effort from many people. The Hurricanes’ recent championship didn’t simply come out of nowhere; it was built over years of hard work.

So, is it special for a family member’s name to appear on the Stanley Cup? Certainly, it has personal significance. But, one could argue, it would be even more meaningful to ensure those who played a role in achieving such a victory are recognized too.
