On Monday, the NBA held its draft lottery in Chicago, right before the Knicks faced off against the Celtics in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semi-finals at Madison Square Garden. The Mavericks emerged as the big winners, taking home the Cooper Flag’s Top Award of the Year.
Interestingly, Lottery Day coincided with the 40th anniversary of the inaugural NBA lottery, a notable event in American sports history and certainly a significant occasion for the Knicks. The top three memories for the franchise likely remain their 1970 and 1973 championships.
It’s almost poetic, really. Winning the lottery can bring immense fortune, yet being reminded of Patrick Ewing’s iconic ’85 lottery moment shows just how much more significant it is to actually win. Even though the intensity in New York City before 3:30 PM on Saturday might have softened slightly, the Knicks found themselves amidst crucial playoff action when the series picked up again on Monday.
Since securing Ewing’s rights, the Knicks had to persevere for around eight years before making it to the Eastern Final. The hope for a brighter future remains prominent. Personally, I think today’s outlook is even brighter.
