Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi, a Democrat from Illinois, has officially announced his candidacy for the Senate seat currently held by Senator Dick Durbin, who revealed in late April that he would not be running for reelection.
Krishnamoorthi is entering a competitive race, which already includes fellow Democrat Rep. Robin Kelly and Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton. There’s also speculation that Rep. Lauren Underwood is contemplating her own campaign. Notably, Krishnamoorthi brings a substantial financial advantage with a campaign war chest of approximately $19 million.
In a video posted to his campaign’s social media account, Krishnamoorthi expressed his commitment to stand up against “bullies like Donald Trump and Elon Musk.” He described these figures as leaders who are “ignoring the constitution” and aiming for “revenge.” His announcement signals a proactive stance, emphasizing his intention to challenge powerful interests.
He shared insights about his background as a first-generation American, mentioning how his family benefited from food stamps and public housing to achieve middle-class status. Krishnamoorthi also referenced his relationship with former President Barack Obama, conveying a sense of hope and opportunity regardless of one’s name. Additionally, he highlighted his strong endorsements from organizations like Planned Parenthood and a poor rating from the National Rifle Association.
“I will never be silent while billionaires like Elon Musk and others undermine the aspirations of the next generation for their own selfish reasons,” he stated, pledging to prioritize the needs of working Americans.
First elected in 2016, Krishnamoorthi currently serves as a ranking member on the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party and also holds a significant role in the Subcommittee on Healthcare and Financial Services Oversight.
