Confrontation on CNN Over ICE Shooting
In a tense exchange on CNN, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem faced off against anchor Jake Tapper regarding the shooting of Renee Good by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Noem asserted that Tapper couldn’t manipulate the facts just because he disagreed with them.
Tapper questioned Noem on how she could swiftly label Good as a “domestic terrorist” and her defense of ICE officer Jonathan Ross shortly after the incident. “Everything I said has been proven to be true,” Noem responded during the segment on “State of the Union.”
Noem’s initial comments after the shooting drew scrutiny, particularly her claim that ICE agents were attempting to clear the way when Good allegedly attacked them with her car. “That didn’t happen,” Tapper challenged, expressing his discomfort with the portrayal of Good’s actions.
Noem defended her statements, asserting that the residents of Minneapolis deserved transparency about the events. She emphasized that Good had obstructed federal operations, claiming, “For long periods of time, they blocked roads, yelled, and disrupted federal law enforcement efforts.”
Video footage from the scene showed Good, a mother of three, blocking the officers for over three minutes before suddenly accelerating toward Ross, who narrowly escaped injury. Noem claimed that Ross was hit and required hospital treatment.
Responding to Tapper’s queries, Noem maintained that the vehicle was used as a weapon against law enforcement. “He protected himself, and he protected those around him,” she insisted, reiterating that actions against officers in this manner constitute domestic terrorism.
Noem noted that Trump administration officials, including Vice President J.D. Vance, have supported Ross amid rising criticism. The FBI has announced an investigation into the shooting as well.
While Tapper attempted to draw parallels with other violent incidents, Noem redirected the focus, asserting that all investigations should be grounded in the specific details of each situation. She also criticized local Minnesota leaders for inflammatory comments, claiming they are exacerbating tensions and encouraging unrest.
Noem called on them to take a more responsible approach to their rhetoric in order to help foster peace in Minneapolis.
