Kristin Cavallari is refusing to be criticized after a viral video about not wearing sunscreen was taken out of context.
The “Laguna Beach” alum said of her: “Let’s be honest” podcast “I don’t wear sunscreen, and every time I’m interviewed I get a nasty flak for admitting that I don’t,” she said earlier this year, when she invited guest Dr. Ryan Monahan to talk about the health benefits of the sun and “why you don’t need sunscreen.”
Wednesday’s Dear Media “Breaking Beauty” podcast, Host Jill Dunn asked her about those comments.
“Actually, the conversation was about the health benefits of the sun,” Cavallari explained. “The sun has health benefits. We get Vitamin D from the sun. That’s not debatable. But when I said I don’t wear sunscreen, what I meant to say is that it’s not part of my daily skin care routine. That’s on me. I’ve never told other people not to wear sunscreen. I just stated what I do.”

She said she uses tinted moisturizer with sunscreen and wears a hat while on vacation.
“I’m careful, but I’m a sunshine girl. I’m from California, I’m a sunshine girl. I was never encouraging other people not to wear sunscreen. It was more like, ‘This is what I do, let’s talk about the health benefits of the sun,’ because if you’re wearing loads of sunscreen, you’re not getting any vitamin D from the sun.”
“I have never told anyone not to wear sunscreen, I just stated what I do.”
However, the Skin Cancer Foundation says there’s no evidence that wearing sunscreen causes vitamin D deficiency: “In fact, people who use sunscreen daily can maintain their vitamin D levels.”

“When I’m putting on sunscreen, I make sure it has zinc oxide in it,” she said on the podcast, adding, “I think it’s important to have those conversations.”

Cavallari suggested that she could “take the internet by storm” by launching her own SPF brand without the chemicals she dislikes.
“It’s hard to find a good clean sunscreen,” she said, admitting that she likes the brands Elta MD and Dune. “That’s not a bad idea. I’ll look into it.”
