Deli items available at Kroger supermarkets have been recalled due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
The company announced this recall over the weekend, specifically affecting basil pesto bowtie salad and smoked mozzarella penne salad. These products were available at deli counters and in self-service areas across 1,860 stores in 28 states, according to Kroger.
This recall was initiated earlier in the month after Kroger was alerted by suppliers who had provided the pasta used in these salads, notably linked to Nate’s Finest Food based in Roseville, California.
It’s worth mentioning that just last week, Albertsons also identified Nate’s as a supplier for pasta used in various salads and ready-to-eat meals.
Kroger indicated that the recalled salads were sold in states including Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia. Stores under Kroger’s banner include Kroger, Baker, City Market, Dillon, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerves, King Soopers, Payless, Ralph, and Smith.
On the other hand, Albertsons mentioned that affected products can be found in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. They were available at various Albertsons-owned outlets, including Community Markets of Albertsons, Albertsons Market, Amigos, Andronico’s, Cals Safeway, Eagle, Parkn Save, Pavilion, Market Street, Randall’s, Safeway, Tom Thumb, United, and Bonds.
Interestingly, neither retailer has received reports of health issues linked to the affected products prior to this recall. It’s unclear if the pasta involved in Kroger’s recall is associated with ongoing investigations related to a recent listeria outbreak tied to prepared pasta meals sold at various supermarkets.
Both companies have advised customers to discard the recalled items or return them for a refund.
The announcement from Kroger included a note for anyone concerned about potential illness to reach out to their healthcare provider.
For additional questions, customers can contact Kroger at 1-800-KROGER or reach Albertsons’ customer service line.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), listeriosis affects approximately 1,600 individuals in the U.S. annually, resulting in around 260 fatalities. Pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infections during pregnancy can lead to serious outcomes, including miscarriage or premature delivery.
Common symptoms of listeria infection include fever, diarrhea, headache, stiff neck, nausea, and abdominal pain. Pregnant women often experience milder symptoms, as noted by the CDC.
