Jared Kushner Joins Efforts for Gaza Ceasefire

Jared Kushner, former President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, arrived in Egypt on Wednesday, collaborating with White House envoy Steve Witkov to negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza. His involvement is significant, considering he had limited engagement during Trump’s second term, yet he is still seen as a crucial player for U.S. interests in this ongoing conflict.

Officials from the White House conveyed that Kushner’s experience as a key architect of the Abraham Accords makes him a reputable figure in Middle Eastern policy. They emphasized gratitude for his expertise as negotiations aimed at ending the hostilities and releasing the 48 hostages continue.

Rebecca Heinrichs from the Hudson Institute observed that Kushner’s presence signals a serious commitment to achieving progress. She noted that his previous role in brokering deals adds optimism to the current diplomatic efforts.

Reports indicate that negotiations will persist in Egypt, with representatives from other countries, including Qatar, participating until a feasible agreement emerges. This is the third day of discussions since Israeli and Hamas officials initially convened on Monday in Sharm El Sheikh, a coastal resort city in Egypt.

These talks follow President Trump’s introduction of a 20-point peace plan aimed at resolving the conflict and ensuring rapid hostage returns. Shortly thereafter, Netanyahu showed willingness to agree to the terms while waiting for Hamas’ response.

Although Hamas seems to have accepted most conditions from the recently proposed plan, they raised concerns about certain aspects, especially regarding the return of bodies buried under rubble. There is evident distrust about the complete disarming of Hamas, along with fears about whether Israel will genuinely commit to halting military actions in Gaza after the hostages’ return.

Experts believe the current dynamics are unique, with Trump exerting pressure on Netanyahu amid ongoing military strategies in Gaza. John Hanna, a national security analyst, remarked on the critical necessity for Israel’s long-term security and Netanyahu’s political survival to align effectively with U.S. intentions.

Public sentiment in Israel reflects growing dissatisfaction with Netanyahu’s handling of the hostage situation, further complicating the political landscape he faces.
