KY inmate who killed 3 children, raped their mother dies awaiting execution

A western Kentucky man on death row for killing three children, raping his mother and setting his home on fire has died, authorities said Tuesday.

Kentucky Department of Corrections spokeswoman Lisa Lamb announced that Kevin Wayne Dunlap, 51, died Sunday after being taken to a hospital from the Kentucky Correctional Facility in Eddyville. She said federal regulations prevent her from releasing any more information.

Dunlap pleaded guilty in 2010 to attacking a woman in her Roaring Springs home in 2008, killing her children and then burning it down. The jury recommended the death penalty.

On October 15, 2008, Dunlap approached the victim while she was working in her yard and asked to see a house that was for sale. Once inside, he pulled out a gun and tied the victim’s hands and ankles with zip ties. When the children returned home, he tied them up and placed them in another part of the house.

The children killed in the attack were aged 5, 14 and 17. The coroner determined that each child died from multiple stab wounds.

After the mother was raped and stabbed, she pretended to be dead and fled the burning house.

His defense attorney asked for the death sentence to be reversed, but the Kentucky Supreme Court upheld it. The judges found there was no error in forcing Dunlap to admit to the killing and leaving the jury to decide only whether he should be sentenced to death or a reduced sentence.
