Kyiv experiences extensive Russian drone and missile strikes, with sounds of explosions heard across the city.

Kiev Under Attack Amid Prisoner Exchange

Late Friday, the capital of Ukraine experienced a significant combined assault involving drones and missiles, accompanied by explosions and machine gun fire throughout the city.

Many residents took refuge in metro stations underground as a precaution.

This nighttime offensive from Russia extended into Saturday morning, occurring just hours after both nations initiated a major prisoner swap, which included hundreds of soldiers and civilians. This was part of an agreement reached at a meeting in Istanbul the previous week.

The agreement, while a rare moment of cooperation, underscored the ongoing challenges in reaching a ceasefire attempted three years prior.

According to Tymur Tkachenko, a representative of the Kiev administration, intercepted missiles and fragments from drones fell in at least four districts of the capital. He reported that six individuals required medical assistance due to the attack, while two fires ignited in the Solomianskyi district.

Before the assault, Mayor Vitalii Klitschko alerted the city’s residents about the impending threat, warning that over 20 Russian strike drones were approaching.

The prisoner exchange that day marked the first step in a more intricate operation involving both prisoners and civilians. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that 390 Ukrainians would be returning home, with further releases anticipated over the weekend, making it potentially the largest exchange amidst the ongoing conflict.

In a reciprocal move, the Russian Ministry of Defense noted that they received an equivalent number of individuals from Ukraine.

This exchange was yet another in a series of swaps since the war began, and highlighted the fact that despite such developments, combat along the front lines continued unabated. The fighting stretched over approximately 1,000 kilometers (or 620 miles), resulting in severe casualties on both sides, as neither country seemed willing to ease the intensity of the conflict.
