Incident at Texas Elementary School
A man dressed in tactical gear and armed with a firearm gained access to the main area of Zwink Elementary School in Texas through a door that was not properly secured, authorities revealed on Tuesday.
Kyle Criss, 39, was taken into custody at his residence on Wednesday night, facing a felony charge for unlawfully carrying a weapon in a restricted zone following the incident. He was apprehended by police from the Klein Independent School District, just minutes away from the school.
Interestingly, Criss claimed to be a security guard but was actually unemployed, as stated in reports.
The incident occurred shortly after parents exited the school; Criss entered the premises just 15 seconds later, with the door not fully closed. According to the school district, he appeared to be in uniform and had a firearm secured in a holster.
However, the school’s security system inadvertently trapped him in the office area, preventing any further intrusion. When approached by office staff, he failed to provide identification, prompting them to alert armed campus security immediately.
Luckily, Criss was not able to access the hallway where students were present.
After exiting the school grounds, he fled in a vehicle. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries among students or staff during the incident.
The district informed parents of the situation on Wednesday while coordinating with law enforcement to identify Criss. They cautioned that any public notice at that time could have compromised the ongoing investigation. As a measure of caution, increased security and police presence has been established on campus.
Currently, Criss remains in custody at the Harris County Jail, with bail set at $75,000.
