Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has implored the city’s wealthy residents to donate funds to purchase property that can be used to house the city’s growing homeless population.
fox news report:
“We are currently working to eliminate night rentals.” [Bass] continued. “We will use individuals, the private sector, and philanthropic funds to join us in this effort to help the most fortunate Angelenos acquire more real estate, lower capital costs, and help expedite housing.” I request you to do so.”
“This is the mission of our new capital campaign, LA4LA.”
…
The new program relies on the “humanity and generosity of the private sector,” Democrats added. “LA4LA could be a game-changer for Los Angeles, an unprecedented partnership to fight this emergency, and an example of how we can disrupt the status quo and build new systems that save lives.”
Bass set a goal in early 2023 to move 17,000 homeless people off the city’s streets in his first year in office. And in fact, 21,000 people have been moved to temporary shelters, many to hotel and motel rooms.
But despite early successes, the homeless population continues to grow, with homeless numbers up 9% in the city and 10% in the county as of last year. And homeless encampments have returned, often in the very places from which they were evicted.
A number of efforts are already underway to tax L.A. residents to pay for homeless housing and services, including a sales tax hike and new taxes on home sales over $5 million.
