The city spends more on the homeless than firefighters, and the homeless will launch almost a third of the fires the department responds, according to a report from the interim fire chief in Los Angeles.
A spectacular report from interim LA Fire Department Chief Roney Villanueva It was revealed Tuesday, by local ABC affiliate KABC-7:
In fiscal year 2024/2025, the city allocated about $961 million to the homeless, but the total LAFD budget for the same fiscal year was below, at around $837 million.
…
The memo details almost a third of all fires (32.91%) responded to the past six years, with members of the homeless community involved.
…
According to the memo, the number of garbage fires in the past decade has been [often started by the homeless] It has skyrocketed by 475%.
Despite spending nearly $1 billion on the homeless, LA has created almost dents on the issue. The number of homeless people in the city fell just 2.2% last year. This is the first decline in the last six years.
Villanueva took over earlier this year after La Mayor Karen Bass fired Christine Crowley in the Palisade fire, and after the department failed to deploy firefighters ahead of time thanks to the city’s budget cuts.
