LA Dodgers commit $1 million to assist immigrant communities following backlash from ICE raids.

Amid increasing pressure to take a stand, the Los Angeles Dodgers have pledged $1 million to assist immigrant families impacted by recent federal immigration actions in Southern California.

This announcement followed a one-day delay coinciding with federal agents’ presence at the team’s stadium, marking the Dodgers’ first public response to the unfolding situation.

The statement from the organization revealed, “In partnership with the City of Los Angeles, the Dodgers have committed $1 million in direct financial support for immigrant families affected by recent events in the area.”

However, the Dodgers faced criticism for what many perceived as a lukewarm response, as immigrant advocacy groups and community leaders expressed the need for more substantive actions from the team. Plans for additional initiatives “with local communities and labor organizations” are expected to be shared soon to further support those impacted.

The Dodgers’ statement also emphasized the team’s and city’s “proven ability to mobilize financial resources for those in critical need,” urging other organizations to do the same.

In the lead-up to this announcement, the team was under fire from fans and immigrant groups for remaining silent as federal operations sparked fear in the LA area.

An alliance of Latino organizations had been encouraging the Dodgers and other professional sports franchises to take decisive action. Notably, last weekend, Latin American pop singer Netza performed “Star Spangled Banner” in Spanish before a home game, seemingly against the team’s wishes.

In response, the Dodgers remarked that they had “no hard feelings” regarding Netza’s performance and would welcome them back.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass commended the team’s proactive decision. “We want to extend our thanks to the Dodgers for this initiative in support of the immigrant community in Los Angeles. In recent weeks, we’ve experienced a jarring situation that has reverberated across our neighborhoods, and our message to all Angelenos is clear.”
