LA lawmaker Eunisses Hernandez holds a presentation against police and ICE

A chaotic anti-police demonstration took place inside Los Angeles City Hall on Friday. This event was officially sanctioned rather than viewed as a protest and was organized by far-left City Councilor Eunice Hernandez.

Situated in the rear of City Hall, often seen as a “sacred” space, the presentation had been permitted after approval from the City Council leadership. It unfolded for about 15 minutes, featuring speakers who demanded the “abolition of the police,” criticized police funding, and called for a withdrawal of support from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Members of the audience donned “abolish the police” jackets and shirts emblazoned with “F— Police.” One participant even wore a keffiyeh, a symbol associated with certain activist movements.

The focus of the event revolved around the New Year’s Eve incident where Keith Porter, allegedly firing a rifle into the air, was shot by an off-duty ICE officer. City officials have warned that firing a weapon in such a manner poses significant risks to public safety.

Porter’s family and supporters contend that ICE agents erred in their response.

Activist Joseph Williams, affiliated with Black Lives Matter Los Angeles, utilized the occasion to advocate for divestment from law enforcement, holding both federal immigration agents and local police accountable for Porter’s death. “We have to take funding away from law enforcement,” he urged the City Council, pressing for accountability from the mayor and a reallocation of city funds.

Williams is familiar with confrontations at City Hall, having previously led protests against police brutality amid the fallout from a scandal involving leaked audio of City Council members. He advocated vehemently against the police response during those times.

Hernandez, who emphasizes her agenda of police abolition, presided over the event. She has consistently opposed increases in police funding and has voted against the city budget advocated by Mayor Karen Bass, which allocated a significant portion to the LAPD.

When approached for a comment regarding the presentation, Hernandez did not respond.

Challenges in Hernandez’s district, particularly in MacArthur Park, have been highlighted in previous reports. The area has become a focal point for police activity, facing numerous public safety crises, including drug-related incidents that have prompted repeated police response.
