Man Sentenced for Involvement in Anti-ICE Riots
A man from California has received a sentence of over three years in federal prison after admitting to his involvement in violent clashes during last year’s anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles. Ismael Vega, 42, who lives in the Westlake area, was given 37 months behind bars along with an order to pay $253,415 in restitution for his actions during the unrest on June 8, 2025, as announced by the Justice Department.
U.S. Attorney Bill Esairi remarked that individuals who attack law enforcement officers responsible for public safety will face serious legal consequences. He added that this should serve as a warning for those who think their actions won’t have repercussions.
Vega had pleaded guilty in April to a charge related to obstructing law enforcement during a civil disturbance.
As per court documents, Vega was part of a large protest crowd on the Main Street overpass when the situation escalated into violence. Prosecutors indicated that he was aware California Highway Patrol officers were stranded beneath the overpass while rioters threw burning debris and other items at a patrol car parked below.
Evidence suggests that Vega actively participated in the mayhem; he helped ignite debris and even set a large cardboard box on fire, which he then dropped on the CHP vehicle. Another individual, Yachua Mauricio Flores, helped fuel the flames as Vega gestured towards the growing fire. Furthermore, Vega admitted to throwing stones at officers as they attempted to navigate the chaotic scene, fully recognizing that the burning debris could cause significant harm.
Prosecutors noted the profound impact of the attack, with one CHP sergeant describing the emotional toll experienced by law enforcement and, notably, his son.
It’s worth mentioning that the unrest occurred just two days after violence erupted against federal agents conducting immigration enforcement in the area. So far, federal prosecutors have charged seven individuals linked to the attack on the overpass. Vega, along with Flores and Adam Charles Palermo, was involved in throwing burning debris at CHP vehicles, while others targeted officers with rocks.
Vega’s sentence marks him as the fifth person dealt with in this case. Flores is awaiting sentencing on August 3, where he could face five years, while Palermo, identified as a ringleader in the incident, will be sentenced on December 14 and could face up to 20 years in prison.
