Ed Miliband The Prime Minister has vowed that the UK will never face an energy bills crisis “ever again” as he seeks to move the country away from fossil fuels.
Speaking on Radio 4’s Today programme, the Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero said:
Millions of people in our country are suffering the worst energy bill crisis in decades, and our government is saying: “We will never let this happen again… and the only answer to ensure this never happens again is to move away from fossil fuels.”
Introducing a government bill to set up a public company Great British EnergyMr Miliband said reliance on fossil fuels had made the country dependent on global markets.
“We can’t control what Putin does and geopolitics is causing energy insecurity. We’re going to get out there and have this discussion,” he said.
Mr Miliband also promised that the measures would “lead to a reduction in bills before Parliament, because the more solar panels we install and the more onshore wind turbines we build, the greater our energy security and the less vulnerable we will be to fluctuations in fossil fuel markets”.

He said the business would “give us the energy security that this country has sorely lacked for decades”.
Mr Miliband said:
The primary mandate this government was elected to do is to address our reliance on fossil fuels leading to a cost of living crisis, and our mission is to become a clean energy superpower.”
Asked about Labour’s plans not to issue new gas and oil licenses in the North Sea, and which critics say could make Britain more dependent on foreign energy, Mr Miliband said: “That’s the idea.
If fossil fuels had given us energy security, we would not have had the terrible cost of living crisis that we have experienced over the past two years.
The energy company was given £8.3 billion of public funding during this parliamentary period to invest in green technologies and aims to develop a further 20-30GW of offshore wind power through partnerships with Crown treasury funds.
Critics say significant funding is needed to implement the reforms. Mr Miliband defended the plans, saying:
“This is a combination of private and public investment. This is a government rushing on behalf of the British people.”
