GoFundMe Fundraising activities The Angel family of 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley, who was allegedly murdered by an illegal immigrant, has raised at least $180,000 in one week.
On February 22nd, Riley went for a morning jog around the University of Georgia (UGA) campus in Athens, Georgia. When she didn’t return for several hours, her roommate called the police.
Her body was eventually found mangled near Herrick Lake on the UGA campus. The next day, Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, was arrested and charged with murder.
Ybarra entered the United States on parole in the fall of 2022 after crossing the southern border, as have millions of others since President Joe Biden took office.
A GoFundMe fundraiser has been launched to support Riley’s family, a week after Riley’s murder made national headlines and prompted local, state and federal lawmakers to crack down on illegal immigration. This means that at least $180,000 has been donated.
As of 5pm ET on Friday, March 1st, the fundraiser was just a few hundred dollars away from reaching the $180,000 mark.
“Rayken Riley was a 2025 BSN student at Augusta University’s Athens campus and an active member of UGA’s Alpha Chi Omega sorority,” the GoFundMe states.
She was a kind and caring soul whose life was sadly cut short on Thursday, February 22, 2024. Words cannot describe the pain and heartache that Laken’s family and friends are experiencing. She was a wonderful friend, sister, daughter, etc. and touched the lives of those around her. Her infectious smile and contagious laugh lit up every room she entered. Not only was she a kind-hearted soul, but she also excelled in her academics, earning her a place on Augusta University’s Dean’s List in the fall of 2023. [Emphasis added]

Riley’s funeral was held Friday in her hometown of Woodstock, Georgia. On Thursday, hundreds of UGA students attended a vigil in Riley’s memory.

Father of Angels John Phillips thanked those who have donated to the GoFundMe fundraiser so far, calling Riley a “wonderful daughter, sister, and friend” whose “love for the Lord It’s embodied in every aspect of life.”
“While we will miss her every day, we are committed to honoring her as she moves forward in life,” Phillips wrote. “Every dollar donated will go toward establishing the Laken Hope Riley Foundation, which will be used to promote murder awareness and women’s safety. Once again, thank you for your kind support, and I We love you all!”
