Landry Shamet’s Impact on the Knicks’ Overtime Victory
During the first three quarters, Landry Shamet saw just 3 minutes and 13 seconds on the court. He attempted one shot—unfortunately, he missed.
Then, everything shifted for Shamet and the Knicks.
Coach Mike Brown turned to Shamet as Josh Hart struggled with his shooting and had trouble containing Donovan Mitchell. Shamet played an essential role in the Knicks’ thrilling 115-104 overtime win against the Cavaliers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals at Madison Square Garden.
“It’s great,” he remarked after the Knicks made an impressive comeback from a 22-point deficit in the final quarter—setting a record for playoff comebacks. “It’s fun to see MSG rally, especially in the playoffs. I’m really proud of our team, considering we were way behind.”
Shamet certainly contributed to that comeback.
On one hand, the veteran guard nailed three pivotal 3-pointers, including one that evened the score with just 45 seconds remaining in regulation. He also hit another crucial shot late in overtime, extending the Knicks’ lead to nine points.
Defensively, Shamet managed to limit Mitchell’s scoring, allowing him only three points during the fourth quarter and overtime.
“One of the luxuries of our team is the number of great defenders we have,” Shamet explained. “I didn’t play much early on, but I thought, why not use my fresh legs against a guy who’s been hot? Competing, being physical, just taking advantage of my energy.”
The playoffs have been unpredictable for Shamet. He didn’t see any action late in the season opener against the Hawks and was sidelined early against the 76ers. However, he returned to the lineup after OG Anunoby was out for the last two games of the Eastern Conference semifinals. On Tuesday night, with Anunoby back, he found himself on the bench again—yet he was ready.
“He played great. That’s what he does. He’s been a true professional since he entered the league,” said Jalen Brunson. “Whatever role you give him, he’ll rise to the occasion. We have complete confidence in him.”
Post-game, Shamet received congratulations from notable figures like John Starks, Spike Lee, and Ben Stiller, as they wanted to shine a light on the often-overlooked heroes of this win.
“It’s kind of unbelievable when you think about it,” Shamet reflected.
