Large '8647' inscription in National Mall grass leads to inquiry

An investigation has been initiated by law enforcement after a large “8647” message was discovered carved into the lawn of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., prompting federal authorities to express concerns over political intimidation and potential violence.

A spokesperson from the Department of the Interior condemned the act, calling it “outrageous vandalism.” The department is taking threats against the president extremely seriously, stating that the U.S. Park Police will look into the matter and hold those responsible accountable.

This carving was located between the Washington Monument and the World War II Memorial. Previously, officials have interpreted the number “86” as a political threat, given that in the restaurant industry it signifies exclusion or denial of service, while “47” seems to refer to Trump as the 47th president.

White House officials have labeled the “86 47” message as threatening because “86” implies removal or exclusion. The number “47,” as mentioned, relates to Trump being the 47th president.

U.S. Park Police reacted to the situation around lunchtime, accompanying their response with grass sample collections for analysis.

White House Press Secretary Davis Ingle spoke out, stating that those fostering or participating in political violence should be condemned strenuously and perhaps even seek psychiatric help, alluding to what he called “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

The timing of the incident is notable, occurring just days before President Trump’s birthday, which coincides with a UFC Freedom Fight event in Southern Law anticipated to attract around 4,000 fans to the White House.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship had set up a weigh-in event near Lincoln Memorial on Friday, amidst plans for America’s 250th anniversary celebrations in D.C., with expectations of large crowds and heightened security.

Trump has faced repeated threats, including an alarming incident during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in April. In 2024, he survived two assassination attempts—one in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a bullet narrowly missed him during a rally.

This alarming situation occurs against a backdrop of heightened scrutiny from the administration regarding similar “86 47” messages. Former FBI Director James Comey is under investigation after being indicted last year for an Instagram post featuring the phrase. Should he be convicted, he faces up to ten years in prison, although Comey asserts that his post was not intended as a call to violence and was deleted after it was misinterpreted.
