Large Russian drone and missile attack on Kyiv results in at least 14 fatalities

Kiev, Ukraine

At least 14 people have lost their lives and 48 others were injured early Thursday due to a series of attacks involving Russian drones and missiles targeting the Ukrainian capital. Among the more shocking details is that these strikes, which included one in the city center, mark the first significant Russian assault on Kiev in several weeks.

The Ukrainian Air Force has reported that Russia unleashed around 598 strike drones and decoys, alongside 31 missiles of various types across the nation, positioning this as one of the largest air confrontations of the ongoing war.

Sadly, the fatalities included three children aged 2, 14, and 17, according to Timur Tokachenko, head of the city government. Rescue efforts are ongoing to free those trapped beneath the rubble.

In a post on X following the attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of negotiations, asserting that Russia opts for aggression rather than dialogue. He appealed to the international community for a more principled stance against these actions.

In response, Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced that they downed 102 Ukrainian drones overnight. Fires were reported at the Afipsky Oil Refinery in Krasnodar, with another blaze at the Novokibishevsk refinery in Samara.

In recent weeks, Ukrainian drones have actively targeted refineries and related infrastructure, aiming to impact Russia’s wartime economy. This has resulted in gas shortages and increased prices across some parts of Russia.

According to Tokachenko, Russian forces have employed a mix of decoys, cruise, and ballistic missiles in their assaults.

The strikes affected at least 20 locations in seven Kyiv districts. Nearly 100 buildings were damaged, including a shopping center in the city’s core, with thousands of windows shattered.

Ukrainian defense forces managed to shoot down 563 drones, decoys, and 26 missiles during the conflict.

This latest Russian offensive has struck deep into the heart of Kiev, an area typically safer from such attacks since the war’s onset. Residents were seen clearing glass and debris from damaged structures.

Sofia Aquilina, a 21-year-old resident, shared her experience, noting that she’d never witnessed such a close attack before. “Negotiations haven’t led to any results yet. Unfortunately, the people are the ones suffering,” she lamented.

As smoke billowed from the remains of a five-story building in the Darnitsky area, firefighters battled the flames, adding a noxious smell of burning materials to the air.

Emergency responders continued their search for survivors, recovering bodies from the wreckage. A crowd of residents awaited news, with one man searching for updates on his missing wife and son.

By afternoon, reports showed at least ten individuals were still unaccounted for, according to emergency services.

This district has been targeted before, a neighbor remarked. Olexandre Kirko arrived after a missile struck a building where his sister lives. Hearing screams of those trapped, he rescued three survivors, including a child.

“This is inhumane,” he said, visibly shaken. “Every part of me wants this war to end as soon as possible. But every air raid siren sends fear through me.”

The Ukrainian railway operator reported damage in the Vinnitza and Kiev regions, leading to delays and service disruptions.

This attack marks the first major coordinated assault involving both drones and missiles since President Donald Trump held discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin about ending the conflict earlier this month.

While diplomatic efforts seemed to gain momentum post-meeting, little has emerged about the forthcoming steps.

Western leaders have criticized Putin for stalling in peace negotiations while Russian forces advance further into Ukraine. This week, Ukrainian military officials confirmed they had taken control of an eighth region amidst ongoing hostilities.

Zelensky has advocated for U.S. sanctions aimed at undermining the Russian economy if Putin does not commit seriously to ceasefire talks, reiterating these calls after Thursday’s strikes.

Trump has reportedly stalled U.S. proposals for direct peace talks, indicating that he may decide on next steps in a couple of weeks absent any scheduled in-person discussions.
