On Tuesday night, residents in California observed an unusual aircraft—a Navy “Submarine Hunter”—flying over Fresno.
This sighting follows a recent appearance of a Boeing E-6B Mercury, commonly dubbed the “Doomsday Plane,” which had also been spotted above the city. These events have sparked concerns among Californians regarding potential drone threats from Iran, particularly after an unconfirmed memo from the FBI hinted at drones possibly originating from an unidentified vessel off the U.S. coast.
The Boeing P-8 Poseidon, which was seen overhead, is described as a multi-role maritime patrol aircraft proficient in various operations including anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, as well as intelligence and surveillance tasks.
This particular Poseidon spent about 30 minutes circling the city before heading back north, according to KMPH News. Local witnesses mentioned the plane’s loudness and its low altitude, with several noting they saw it before hearing it.
In videos shared, the aircraft can be seen soaring through clear blue skies, briefly illuminated by sunlight.
While the Boeing E-6B serves as a critical platform for nuclear command and can assume critical roles in emergencies, the P-8 Poseidon specializes in tracking and eliminating maritime threats, notably submarines. It’s rather unsettling, though, given that it’s not clear why this “hunter” was operating over Fresno.
With the escalating tensions regarding international drone activity, the presence of these planes—especially the “Doomsday Plane”—adds to the urgency of those concerns. Residents are left wondering about the potential implications of such military movements overhead.
