Henrik Lundqvist, the iconic goaltender for the Rangers, shares his deeper insights about Larry Brooks, who covered his impressive 15-year career. Brooks, known as “King Henrik,” has now joined the ranks of Hall of Famers. Lundqvist reminisces about the impact Brooks had on his life, especially following his recent passing after a brief battle with cancer.

For Lundqvist, Brooks was more than just a reporter—it was a relationship built through countless conversations over the years. Athletes often find the media intertwined with their journey, and for Lundqvist, Brooks was a familiar face. They discussed games extensively, but their conversations meandered into various topics as well.

Reflecting on their early interactions, Lundqvist recalls being just 23 when he first recognized Brooks always at practices. He didn’t initially know much about him but quickly admired how adeptly he asked questions. It struck Lundqvist that Brooks truly understood the game, which was evident in the way he engaged with players.

As he progressed in his career, Lundqvist grew to respect Brooks’ knowledge and perspective on hockey. The honest nature of Brooks often led to some challenging questions during interviews, which wasn’t lost on Lundqvist. He appreciated Brooks’ presence—always ready to share insightful dialogue, often stepping away from the crowd to engage in one-on-one discussions.

Brooks and Lundqvist had built a unique trust over time; the frequency of their interactions made it feel like they genuinely understood each other. Lundqvist acknowledges that he likely conversed more with Brooks than anyone else throughout his career.

Interestingly, Lundqvist also notes how nicknames like “King Henrik” emerged, a testament to Brooks’ ability to connect with fans, especially Rangers supporters. Lundqvist fondly recalls when Brooks would challenge figures like former coach John Tortorella, showcasing his fearless nature and strong opinions.

Though Lundqvist’s relationship with Brooks was primarily centered on hockey, they also discussed personal aspects of life. After retiring, Lundqvist appreciated the opportunity to learn more about Brooks’ family and life beyond the rink.

The sad news of Brooks’ passing reached Lundqvist in an email from a friend. Just a week earlier, he had sent Brooks a message filled with encouragement as he battled illness, receiving a thoughtful response in return.
