Las Vegas hotel bedbug outbreaks lead to several lawsuits concerning 'harm'

Palistrites Filled with Mattresses Amidst Bedbug Outbreaks

The streets of Paris, France, are currently cluttered with mattresses stuffed into plastic bags, a visible consequence of ongoing bedbug outbreaks in several cities. An 18-year-old walking home from school unexpectedly came across a discarded bed on the roadside.

Meanwhile, in Las Vegas, the bedbug situation has propelled legal action after four individuals reported serious injuries following incidents at two resorts on the Strip. Three lawsuits were filed in April connected to events that transpired during the summer of 2024.

One complaint details the experience of Theresa Bruce, a guest at Treasure Island, who reported being bitten multiple times during her stay on June 21. Although she tried switching rooms, the bite incidents continued.

The complaint highlights how she felt “injured and angry” upon discovering she had been bitten, especially after hotel staff confirmed the existence of bedbugs in both of her rooms.

On June 8, Stephen and Courtney Garry, staying at the Luxor Hotel, also noticed bites on their skin, which became red, swollen, and increasingly itchy. Courtney even expressed feeling as though her throat was “closed,” leading to a hospital visit via ambulance.

According to their complaint, the couple was “forced to purge all of their belongings” because of the extent of the infestation.

A month later, on July 16, Brianna Mackenzie filed a similar complaint after staying at the Luxor, describing herself as being “slaughtered by bed bugs” and experiencing “other personal injury, mental distress, and damage.”

Brian Villag, the founder and CEO of My Bedbug Attorney, who is representing the plaintiffs, explained that these cases arose from clients’ exposure to bedbugs, resulting in physical and emotional injuries. He pointed out that the bedbug problem in Las Vegas hotels is a pressing concern.

Most of his clients reportedly suffer from bites, scarring, itching, and even emergency room visits due to the repercussions of the bedbug exposure.

Villag emphasizes the need for housekeeping staff to be well-trained in identifying and eradicating bedbugs. He noted that emotional trauma stemming from such encounters is significant and shouldn’t be overlooked.

He also urged hotel owners to prioritize pest control and proper procedures to combat this swiftly reproducing menace. After all, bedbugs can multiply rapidly.

For those who think they may have been exposed to these pests, Villag recommended documenting everything, noting that guests often don’t immediately realize that bedbugs are causing their bites.

As of now, neither Treasure Island nor Luxor has responded to the lawsuits, although Villag remains optimistic about their forthcoming replies. “Always check yourself before laying your head down at night,” he advised, emphasizing vigilance.
