Last victim of five drowned in Ohio river identified as 18-year-old aspiring firefighter

The last identified victim of the Ohio River tragedy was an 18-year-old named Jonathan Gabriel Vargas, who had aspirations of becoming a first responder. His mother, Ana Vargas, spent her birthday trying to confirm her son’s identity at the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, which must have been incredibly difficult for her.

Vargas was confirmed as the final deceased individual from a tragic drowning incident in the Scioto River that occurred over the weekend during a fishing trip. His mother shared that he aimed to join the Navy first, and then pursue a career as a firefighter or work in an ambulance.

Born in Maryland, Vargas had spent some years in El Salvador before reuniting with his family in 2021. He was the last of five victims that succumbed while attempting to save one another in the river.

Witnesses reported that the group had been fishing in waist-deep water right before the incident unfolded. The other identified victims included Jose Mario Pineda Diaz, 33, and his wife, Marina Suyapa Regaldo, 28, along with Miguel Ángel Guerra and Carmen Idalia Lara Ferrera, both 33. The latter couple were also Honduran nationals.

The unfortunate events began when one of the individuals ventured deeper into the water and, upon struggling, prompted others to dive in after him. Sadly, none of the five managed to make it back to safety, and two young children watched helplessly as they lost their parents in the water.

Authorities confirmed that all victims resided in Columbus, Ohio. The investigation into the drowning incident is still ongoing.
