Latino civil rights organization cautions against irresponsible actions at demonstrations

Latino civil rights group warns against 'reckless behavior' at protests

The largest Latino civil rights organization in the U.S. has expressed concern over “reckless behavior” during protests against President Trump’s immigration policies as demonstrations gain momentum nationwide. The National Guard is being mobilized in several states in response.

On Thursday, the United Latin American Citizens’ Federation (LULAC) released a “National Safety Advisory” following Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s announcement of deploying 5,000 National Guard personnel and 2,000 Texas troops to support local law enforcement ahead of significant protests planned for the weekend.

LULAC’s president, Roman Palomales, emphasized the importance of peaceful and legal protests. He urged participants to refrain from bringing any items that could be viewed as weapons, as this could lead to “legal repercussions.”

“Those attending the demonstrations must realize that actions perceived as hostile towards National Guard members and federal agents could be considered federal crimes, leading to severe penalties. It’s crucial to avoid reckless behavior that might jeopardize our legitimate cause or put anyone in danger,” Palomales stated.

Previously, LULAC criticized the Trump administration’s decision to dispatch National Guard troops for demonstrations in Los Angeles, where Palomales joined local leaders to speak out against federal immigration policies.

The administration’s stringent immigration enforcement has ignited recent protests throughout the nation, with more anticipated in various cities.

On Thursday morning, President Trump remarked that California Governor Gavin Newsom should appreciate the National Guard and Marines’ presence in response to the demonstrations in Los Angeles. He suggested that conditions in Southern California are improving, thanks to the support from 700 Marines and thousands of National Guard troops, despite opposition from state officials.

“Los Angeles has remained safe over the last two nights. Our outstanding National Guard has bolstered the LAPD, enabling them to operate more effectively with assistance from the Marines,” Trump said.

Governor Abbott announced the increase in National Guard and Texas public safety personnel on Thursday morning, stating that it aligns with President Trump’s enforcement of immigration laws.
