Latvian tennis player Jelena Ostapenko expressed her regret on social media after an emotional exchange with American tennis player Taylor Townsend following her loss at the US Open.
During the confrontation, Ostapenko accused Townsend of being “uneducated” after her early exit from the tournament. She later explained on social media that English is not her first language.
In response to Ostapenko’s apology, Townsend commented after winning a doubles match, saying, “It’s good that she did that, she apologized. It’s okay, it’s cool. At the end of the day, I think it’s a learning experience for her… it’s great that she went to social media and apologized.”
Townsend mentioned she hadn’t received a personal apology from Ostapenko. The two had faced off before, with Townsend winning decisively, 7-5 and 6-1, in their earlier match, during which Ostapenko’s comments were made public.
When asked if Ostapenko’s remarks had any racial implications, Townsend replied, “I didn’t say that, but there’s a stigma attached to the community of ‘uneducated,’ which is the farthest from the truth.” She added that she wants to focus on progressing in the tournament rather than dwelling on the incident.
After the match, Ostapenko expressed her frustration about Townsend’s warm-up routine before the match, indicating some tension between the players in the lead-up to the competition.
