A recall was issued Thursday as Woolite portrays laundry detergent because of the risk of exposure to bacteria that could cause “severe infections.”
The voluntary recall applies to more than 16,000 50-fried ounce bottles from Woolite sold exclusively on Amazon in January, according to a notice from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Consumers who have bottles containing lot codes S24364, S24365, S24366 printed on the top of the bottle should immediately stop using detergent.
CPSC said the product can contain bacterial species of fungi, including Pseudomonas oleovorans, an environmental organism that is widely found in soil and water.
“People with weak immune systems or those with external medical devices exposed to bacteria face the risk of serious infections that may require treatment,” the agency said.
Bacteria can enter the body through the eyes or through skin breaks, officials said.
People with a healthy immune system are usually not affected by bacteria.
As of Friday, no incidents or injuries had been reported.
Customers who purchase the product will be asked by CPSC to give the manufacturer Reckitt a full refund.
Returnees must write their name with a permanent marker on the back of the bottle and “recall” them, take a photo with the UPC and lot code displayed, and email the photo to consumer@reckitt.com.

Once you receive the refund, you can remove the product by closing the bottle tightly and throwing it in the trash can.
CPSC warns customers not to empty the bottle before throwing it away, and prevents recycling the bottle.
