Lavrov claims NATO and the EU have declared a 'true war' against Russia

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has criticized NATO and the European Union, asserting that they have declared an “actual war” on Russia. He emphasized their direct involvement in the conflict, particularly pointing to the Ukraine crisis, which he attributes to Western actions facilitated by NATO and the EU.

In response, British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper condemned Lavrov’s statements, labeling the Kremlin’s actions as an “aggressive war.” She stated, “No one can convince us of the myriad distortions and falsehoods presented by Russian representatives regarding the war’s origins.”

This week, former President Trump expressed, for the first time, an optimistic view that Ukraine might reclaim territories lost since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, suggesting that with the right support from Europe and NATO, restoring the pre-war borders is feasible.

Trump referred to Russian forces as “paper tigers,” a comment that reflects his belief in the resilience of Ukraine. Meanwhile, other European leaders have echoed calls for increased pressure on Russia. Kaja Kalas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, highlighted the urgent need to stop Russian aggression and pursue meaningful negotiations unless there are signs of a shift in Russia’s plans.

Recently, NATO leaders indicated that they would take a strong stance against any violations of airspace by Russian jets, with Secretary General Mark NATO Laet preparing for potential military action should such incidents occur. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen remarked that responding to incursions by Russian aircraft into NATO airspace is also being considered.
