Arrest of Homeless Man Linked to Sexual Assaults
A homeless man, Samuel Opoku, 30, was taken into custody on May 12 for unrelated charges, though he gained attention for previous offenses in Toronto. Authorities have charged him with sexual assault and indecent assault in connection with two incidents that took place on May 9 and May 10.
On May 9, Opoku reportedly approached a group of women, made unwelcome advances towards one, and assaulted her before leaving the scene. The next day, he allegedly followed another woman into a commercial office building, then assaulted her as well. Police confirmed that neither of the victims knew him.
Records indicate that Opoku is the same individual arrested in 2019 for throwing “liquid feces” at five different people during three separate instances. These attacks took place at the University of Toronto’s John P. Roberts Research Library, York University’s Scott Library, and near College Street and McCall Street. He faced multiple charges, including five counts of assault with a weapon.
These unusual incidents even inspired a film titled *The Pee Pee Poo Poo Man*, which premiered at Toronto’s Hot Docs Theater in November 2024.
David Hopkinson, a police officer, commented on the series of fecal attacks back in 2019, expressing disbelief: “A young girl had a bucket of excrement and feces thrown on her. I don’t know what to say. I’m at a loss. This is really terrible.”
Interestingly, all the victims from the previous incidents were Asian, but authorities do not think the acts were racially motivated. Toronto police spokesperson Victor Kwon explained, “We don’t know if it’s related because it includes different parts of Asia. Some [victims] were from the West and some were from the East. So they weren’t all Chinese per se.”
Opoku was released on a $1,000 bail following a three-week jail stint for the earlier incidents in 2019. His legal representative argued that he was experiencing mental health issues at that time.
