California Senator Tony Strickland suggests that necessary policy changes are on the horizon following federal intervention regarding the planned early release of an undocumented immigrant. This individual, Oscar Eduardo Ortega-Anguiano, was convicted of DUI manslaughter in 2021 after causing the deaths of two teenagers in Seal Beach, located in Strickland’s district.
Republicans have expressed to Fox News Digital that reforms are crucial for systems like the prison-in-credit approach, which could have let Ortega-Anguiano return to the community as early as July, had the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) not intervened.
Last week, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom indicated that the state would make adjustments regarding Ortega-Anguiano, who is expected to serve three and a half years in state prison.

“We definitely need to reform these programs—some things are just not working,” Strickland commented, emphasizing that public safety should be a government priority. He called for accountability, noting that mistakes can lead to real crimes.
The senator referred to the plan for Ortega-Anguiano’s early release as a significant affront to the families affected by the tragedy.
Ortega-Anguiano, aged 43, was under the influence of alcohol and drugs when he fatally struck 19-year-olds Anya Varfolomeeva and Nicholay Osokin on the 405 freeway in Orange County in November 2021. He was found guilty of multiple counts of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in Spring 2022.
“It’s frustrating,” regarding the release of the individual involved in this tragic case.
Reports indicated that the victims’ families were notified about the early release on Easter Sunday. However, once the DOJ stepped in, they announced plans to pursue federal charges against Ortega-Anguiano to extend his time behind bars.

According to communication from CDCR, details about the release of incarcerated individuals cannot be disclosed for safety reasons. Still, it was noted that inmates can earn credits for participating in rehabilitation programs.
ICE shared with Fox News Digital that Ortega-Anguiano had previously entered the U.S. illegally on two occasions before the fatal incident and had a prior criminal record.
GOP lawmakers exchange criticisms after being accused of mishandling issues related to illegal immigrant felons.
“This situation really hit home for me, especially since it is so rare,” Strickland mentioned. But he also expressed frustration with Sacramento Democrats, implying they’ve been dismissive of concerns about early releases.
“I haven’t heard any meaningful discussion from them. It’s like they don’t care, and frankly, it seems like Governor Newsom is too preoccupied with his presidential campaign to focus on his responsibilities here,” the senator remarked.
Strickland emphasized that residents of California are becoming more aware of issues stemming from state politics, while Orange County officials noted that this growing awareness might lead to positive change.

“On a brighter note, it does seem like people are starting to realize the lack of leadership and are hoping for a shift in how things are handled moving forward.”
