Controversy Surrounds Minnesota Lawmaker and School Board Member’s Arrest
A Minnesota state representative has criticized the local public school system after a St. Paul school board member and well-known Black Lives Matter activist was arrested. The arrest occurred after Chauntil Allen was accused of attacking a church and confronting a pastor affiliated with ICE.
State Representative Eliot Engen, a Republican from Lino Lakes, expressed his concerns to media outlets, stating that most school boards in the Twin Cities area, especially in Ramsey and Hennepin counties, have shifted towards activism instead of focusing on education. He claimed that these boards are failing to address the pressing educational gaps faced by students in the region.
Allen, the school board secretary who has held her position since 2020, was among three individuals taken into custody. This followed a protest at Cities Church in St. Paul during which anti-ICE activists filmed their actions. Allen faces conspiracy charges related to infringing on others’ constitutional rights.
Engen criticized the situation, suggesting that the political activities engaged in by some school board members are detrimental to student welfare. He pointed to a curriculum infused with activism, such as mandatory LGBTQ education and critical race theory, which he believes further complicates traditional educational frameworks.
When discussing Allen’s arrest, Engen was direct, asserting that ideally, she would be found guilty and removed from her position. Yet, he expressed skepticism, fearing that the current administration might instead celebrate her actions.
In an interview following the incident, Allen defended her actions, expressing that they were necessary to convey their message. She described the charges against her as a minor hurdle, arguing that those in her community, particularly marginalized groups, face threats from figures like the pastor involved.
A recent viral video depicted church congregation members fleeing amid the chaos, raising concerns about safety and the effectiveness of dialogue in such heated situations. Allen, who has been involved in activism for years, drew parallels to biblical accounts of Jesus challenging injustice, justifying her methods as part of a larger struggle.
The St. Paul School District has stated that they are addressing the incident in accordance with relevant policies but declined to comment on ongoing legal matters. Attempts to reach Allen and the school board for further comment have gone unanswered.
