Chaos Erupts in Mexico City’s Council Debate
On Monday, a debate within the Mexico City council deteriorated into a physical altercation, with lawmakers pulling hair, throwing punches, and shoving each other after protests regarding the Transparency Institute turned chaotic.
Footage from the scene showed the discussion quickly escalating into violence, with some legislators lunging at one another while others recorded the turmoil.
This confrontation arose during a discussion about dissolving the Transparency Institute in the city. It all started when one woman reached for another’s hand, which prompted a counterreaction and resulted in an elbow to the stomach.
The first woman responded by hitting the other in the back and grabbing her hair, which further intensified the brawl. A male lawmaker intervened, attempting to separate the two, but more legislators surged forward, causing a chaotic tussle at the podium.
Several other women joined in, pushing and grappling as bystanders captured the moment with their phones. The opposition, particularly members from the National Action Party, took a stand by occupying the parliamentary podium, protesting against the proposed bill.
Claims surfaced that the Morena party violated an earlier agreement concerning the establishment of a new transparency body, which probably fueled their actions. As the argument escalated, tensions mounted, leading to a breakdown in order.
Eventually, officials decided to adjourn the meeting, relocating it to a different venue to restore some semblance of order for further discussions.
