Iran launched missile and drone attacks on Israel on Saturday in retaliation for Israel’s alleged attack on the Iranian embassy and the killing of two senior Iranian officials.
The attack began late Saturday night local time in Israel. Israel has put its Iron Dome air defense system on high alert, and the US military has reportedly intercepted several Iranian drones aimed at Israel.
Several lawmakers and officials have reacted to the Iranian attack, which is expected to target Israeli government and military facilities.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said Israel was facing a “vicious” attack and the United States “must stand with our allies.” Johnson accused President Biden’s administration of “undermining” Israel.
“As Israel faces this vicious attack from Iran, the United States must demonstrate its full commitment to working with our vital ally,” Johnson’s office said on social media platforms. X. “We have to be convinced that the world is not just about Israel.”
“I will continue to work with the White House to push for an appropriate response. The Biden administration’s weakening of Israel and appeasement of Iran contributed to these horrific developments.”
Republican Sen. Martha Blackburn called on the U.S. to retaliate against Iran.
“Iran has launched a drone attack against Israel,” Blackburn said on the X show. “@POTUS — We must act quickly and launch aggressive retaliatory strikes against Iran.”
House Minority Leader Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) announced that the House will reschedule next week to consider the Israel bill.
“In light of Iran’s unwarranted attacks on Israel, the House of Representatives next week will change its previously announced legislative schedule and instead consider legislation that would support ally Israel and hold Iran and its terrorist proxies accountable. ,” Scalise posted. X.
“The House strongly supports Israel and there must be consequences for this unprovoked attack,” he continued. “Further details will be forthcoming regarding the legislative matters to be considered.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, a longtime Israel ally who last month called for new elections in the country, said he “stands with” the Israeli people.
“As Israel comes under attack by Iran, we stand with Israel and its people, and the United States will do everything in its power to support Israel’s defense against Iran.” X.
Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) said the United States will “continue” to support Israel and bring aid to Israel’s defense.
“The United States steadfastly supports Israel and its right to defend itself against attacks from Iran and its terrorist proxies,” she said. X. “I will continue to work in the Senate to provide Israel with the support it needs to protect itself.”
