Surveillance video captured the moment a lawn worker used it. his string trimmer A suspected thief and his accomplice attempt to steal lawn care equipment before being hit by a getaway car.
The Harris County 4th Precinct Constable’s Office made the announcement. Post on Facebook Friday, officers were called to the scene on Renmark Lane in northwestern Harris County, police said.
According to Lt. Daniel Garza of the Harris County Constable 3rd Precinct, a lawn worker was at work when he noticed a man stealing supplies from his vehicle down the street.
“He observed a black Mercedes and a red Nissan Altima driving down the roadway,” Garza explained. “The suspect exited a red Nissan Altima, stole two backpack blowers from the trailer, placed them in the back seat, and began fleeing the scene.”
They tried to hit him with their car as they drove towards him. Instead, he hits the car with a string trimmer and one of the men falls out of the car.
He began hitting the man with the trimmer, knocking him down several times.
At this point in the video, another man steps into the frame and yells at the suspect to stay still, but the suspect manages to stumble away. The car backed up and he was able to get into the car.
The worker said five men were involved in the robbery and one fired a gun at him during the incident.
Officer Mark Herman of the 4th Precinct said police were able to identify the suspect after he went to the hospital seeking treatment for his injuries.
“The suspect, Jerrell Alexander, was struck and sustained minor injuries and was subsequently transported to a local hospital,” Herman said.
The video also showed an accomplice yelling, “Come on, Jerel!”
Police arrested a 24-year-old man and charged him with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. Alexander had a previous conviction for robbery and assault in 2019. His bond was set at $50,000.
The police trying to identify and four other suspects in the robbery. All are described as black males, and police believe they have images of the suspects from other security videos.
Mr. Garza offered some tips on how people can help catch thieves from this type of crime.
“You can take it a step further by taking a photo of your device and recording the serial number. If the number is scratched or damaged, there will still be markings to reliably identify the device. with special markings to identify them,” Garza said.
“In many cases, these suspects try to resell this equipment to pawnshops or other staff members, which allows us to trace this equipment,” he added.
