Attorneys for author E. Jean Carroll say former President Trump's lawyers falsely represented that the former president needed to delay a trial related to the $10 million in defamation damages he is seeking. he suggested.
Roberta Kaplan, Carol's attorney, said: submitted a letter On Saturday, Melania Trump wrote a statement to U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan regarding the former president's request to postpone his trial for a week so he could attend his mother's funeral. Kaplan said in his letter that former President Trump's legal team said he would be unable to attend the Jan. 17 trial because he would be “travelling with his family.”
But Carroll's lawyers pointed out that the Trump campaign had scheduled an event featuring the former president in New Hampshire on January 17th.
“There is no mention of scheduling conflicts related to Mr. Trump's presidential campaign,” Kaplan said in the letter. “However, it has come to our attention that a campaign event featuring Mr. Trump is scheduled for Wednesday, January 17th in New Hampshire.”
“We are bringing this matter to the court's attention because the same lawyers who announced Mr. Trump's availability on Wednesday will file documents today and tomorrow indicating their intent to comply with the court's evidentiary ruling and other orders.” says the letter.
President Trump said last week that he plans to attend all upcoming legal battles in person, including the trial with Carroll that begins Tuesday. After his mother-in-law's death, Trump's lawyers asked the court to postpone the trial by a week so the former president could travel with his family and attend his funeral on January 17th and January 18th. I asked for it.
“So President Trump, who is scheduled to attend the trial, will be unavailable on Wednesday and Thursday because he will be traveling with his family and attending a funeral. This is one of the sad and unexpected realities of life. Given this, President Trump would greatly appreciate this small consideration during this difficult time,” Trump's attorney Alina Habba said in a letter to the judge.
The judge ultimately denied a motion to postpone the trial for a week, a decision that President Trump slammed on social media.
“Louis Kaplan, the horribly bigoted and irrationally angry judge appointed by Clinton because of the Bergdorf hoax, refuses to postpone next week's sham trial, even in consideration of his beloved mother-in-law's funeral.'' This judge is a crooked Joe. “Biden's election interference witch hunt has been relentlessly unfair from day one,” he wrote in Truth Social.
Carroll's lawyers also pointed out in the letter that another of Trump's Truth social posts contained false information.
“We further note that today Mr. Trump posted a statement on Truth Social in which he was postponing any upcoming trial by “one day,” and that the trial “could have taken place at any time.” Point out that he wrote false information. including several months ago,” the letter said.
Amalia Knabs' funeral is scheduled for January 18th in Florida. President Trump is scheduled to hold a campaign event in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on January 17, according to his campaign website.
The case will determine what damages Trump owes for defamation after a jury concluded last year that he sexually abused Carroll. .
