Leader of well-known NYC bodega owners' association steps down after Zohran Mamdani's endorsement for mayor

Bodega Civil War Erupts

Fernando Mateo, the vibrant co-founder of the United Bodega of America, announced his resignation on Wednesday. This decision stemmed from frustration over the group’s chairman endorsing Zoran Mamdani for New York mayor, which Mateo labeled a “betrayal.”

Mateo plans to hold a press conference Thursday morning to condemn President Radames Rodríguez’s backing of Mamdani. He alleges that the endorsement violates the nonprofit status of their association by promoting political candidates.

Expressing his discontent, Mateo told the media he “disapproved of what took place today.” He was clear about resigning “immediately,” calling it a substantial betrayal.

Rodriguez reportedly could not be reached for comment, although he vocally endorsed Mamdani as a supporter of struggling New Yorkers. This comes despite skepticism from Rodriguez and his group regarding one of Mamdani’s notable policy proposals.

This summer, United Bodegas of America warned that Mamdani’s initiative to open city-owned grocery stores across the boroughs could harm independent store owners. Yet, during an advocacy event in the Bronx, Rodríguez praised Mamdani’s commitment to eliminating “bureaucracy” around bodegas while also expressing opposition to city-owned stores.

“Mamdani will reduce fines and fees for local businesses, helping them operate more efficiently,” he touted. “He will streamline permit processes and ease online applications.”

Contrary to what some might think, Mamdani remarked that he isn’t implementing an overly affordable policy, lightheartedly referencing the iconic bacon, egg, and cheese bodega sandwich.

With a grin, he said, “This is not just about bacon, eggs, and cheese. We need to add jalapeños and activate economic change.” He insisted that genuine economic transformation should prioritize supporting local businesses essential to many New Yorkers.

Mateo, who previously pursued the Republican nomination for mayor in 2021, stated the endorsement had caused significant upset among bodega owners. “Hundreds reached out to express their discontent,” he mentioned, trying to reassure them that he was not involved in the decision. He advised them to take a neutral stance.

“We’re not in a position to back anyone. Instead, we need to articulate our concerns and expectations from the government.” He emphasized, “Radames Rodríguez not only betrayed the trust of all the bodega owners we respect but also undermined the integrity of the organization and its leadership.”

The bodega group’s endorsement proved to be a crucial boost for Mamdani, who aims to maintain Latino voter support in the city.

Though many polls show Mamdani ahead among Hispanic voters, a recent Suffolk University poll revealed a tight race, with Mamdani edging out rival Andrew Cuomo by just a single percentage point.
