Leaders of Canada's 'Freedom Convoy' could face up to 8 years in prison.

Leaders of the Canadian “freedom convoy” are facing prison sentences of up to eight years. Critics have described these proposed sentences as “abusive” and indicative of “political revenge.”

This week, Tamara Lich and Chris Barber appeared in an Ottawa courtroom for a sentencing hearing following their April convictions for mischief linked to organizing truck driver protests against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s strict vaccine mandates.

The protest caused significant disruptions in Canada’s capital for three weeks in 2022.

The prosecution is recommending eight years for Lich, 51, from Alberta, and seven years for Barber, from Saskatchewan.

“That seems pretty harsh,” Lich remarked during a stop on her three-day drive to Alberta. “It feels like they’re trying to discourage any future protests like this.”

The crown is also aiming to confiscate Barber’s truck, known as “Big Red,” which was used during the protests.

“I’ve had this truck for 21 years,” Barber, 50, noted. “It’s my source of income, and the crown wants to take it away and destroy it.”

“This is pure vindictive revenge,” Lich added.

Barber’s legal team described the crown’s recommendations as “overreaching, abusive, and unconstitutional.”

Lich and Barber have been under bail conditions for the past three and a half years.

“This is political revenge, not real justice, and it’s eroding our trust in institutions,” commented Melissa Landzmann.

The convoy initially started as a protest against Trudeau’s vaccine mandates for cross-border truck drivers, but it quickly evolved into a larger movement against perceived government overreach related to Covid-19 restrictions.

Former President Trump, reflecting on the situation at the time, stated, “The Freedom Convoy is peacefully protesting against the severe policies of the left-leaning Justin Trudeau, who has wreaked havoc on Canada with his extreme COVID orders.”

Lich and Barber are set to be sentenced on October 7, with their lawyers pushing for an outright dismissal that would spare them from any criminal record.
