General Thomas Bouccière Announces Retirement

On Tuesday, General Thomas Bouccière, Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force, shared that he is retiring due to “personal and family reasons.”

In a heartfelt message posted on Facebook, Bussiere, who leads the Air Force Global Strike Command, stated, “After much reflection, Barb and I have made the tough decision to request retirement from the US Air Force for personal and family reasons.”

He added, “Even as we step back from active duty, our dedication to service persists. We look forward to exploring new ways to support the Air Force and national defense, along with the amazing people who make it all happen.”

Bussiere has held the position of Global Strike Commander since December 2022. In July, he was appointed as the upcoming vice-Chief of Staff of the Air Force, but reports in early September indicated that his nomination was unexpectedly withdrawn.

This change comes on the heels of the dismissal of former Air Force Deputy Chief of Staff General James Sliff back in February.

Bussiere’s retirement announcement arrived just hours after he participated in a significant meeting with top military officials in Quanto, Virginia, where Defense Secretary Pete Hegses discussed fitness standards and reforming the military’s internal complaints and investigation processes.

During the meeting, Hegses remarked, “If what I’m saying resonates with you, it may be time to consider resigning with honor,” directed towards the attendees.

In August, the Air Force revealed that General David Allvin, the service’s chief of staff, would retire in November after two years of a four-year term.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has nominated General Kenneth Willsbach, a highly experienced four-star general and fighter pilot, to serve as the Air Force’s next Chief of Staff.

Air Force Secretary Troy Make expressed his support for Willsbach’s nomination, stating, “We are pleased to put forth General Kenneth Willsbach as the next Chief of Staff. He is a combat-proven aviator with extensive experience in major combat scenarios worldwide. I have complete confidence that he will exemplify the warrior spirit, safeguard our nation, and retain authority over all adversaries.”
