New York City Candidate’s Ties to Activism Raise Concerns

Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic candidate for New York City’s mayoral primary, has been highlighted for his strong association with activism against Israel, according to a report from the anti-Semitism watchdog group, Canary Mission.

As tensions from the recent Israeli-Iran conflict linger, the report cautions that supporting Mamdani could contribute to escalating anti-Israel sentiments in New York City.

Mamdani, who has gained endorsement from Senator Bernie Sanders, is competing against former Governor Andrew Cuomo for the Democratic nomination. Current mayor, Eric Adams, is also in the race, running as an independent.

The Canary Mission’s report describes Mamdani as a significant presence at anti-Israel protests in the city. As a member of the New York State Assembly, he’s introduced measures aimed at regulating nonprofits that send funds to Israel.

Notably, Mamdani joined protests shortly after the tragic events of October 7, 2023, which saw violent attacks by Hamas resulting in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis.

Canary Mission asserts that Mamdani has roots deeply entwined in anti-Israel activism, having been raised in a household where such views were prevalent. Born to Muslim Indian parents, he hails from Kampala, Uganda; his father, Mahmoud Mamdani, is an anthropology professor at Columbia University and has been active in pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

A recent class led by Mahmoud reportedly discussed the justification of violence within anti-colonial struggles, further complicating Mamdani’s narrative.

In a related note, Mamdani’s mother, Mira Naia, is now a filmmaker and has supported calls to boycott Israeli figures, including actress Gal Gadot, relating to accusations of “genocide” against Palestinians.

Mamdani’s office was contacted for comment, but no response was received before deadline.
