Leading Democrats criticize Trump's decision to remove Lisa Cook from the Federal Reserve board

Democrats Respond After Trump’s Attempt to Fire Federal Reserve Governor

Top Democrats voiced their concerns on Monday after President Trump dismissed Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook amid allegations of mortgage fraud.

Cook, who was appointed by former President Biden in 2022, stated her intent to remain in her role, asserting that Trump “has no authority” to remove her.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) criticized the move, describing it as part of Trump’s “DC partisan game” aimed at benefiting wealthy donors while jeopardizing the well-being of hardworking Americans.

Democrats in the Senate expressed worries about potential economic instability, suggesting Cook could uphold the Fed’s independence, which they believe is critical for American savings and mortgages. Schumer remarked that Trump’s actions could have lasting negative effects on the economy.

“This is a reckless move, akin to playing a precarious game of Jenga with a fundamental aspect of our economy,” Schumer said, emphasizing the urgency for a judicial intervention to prevent any lasting harm.

He added that if the economic situation deteriorates, it would be the families and local businesses who bear the brunt, calling out Trump for the consequences that might follow.

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), a prominent voice on the Senate Committee overseeing the Federal Reserve, labeled the dismissal attempt as “illegal.” Warren argued that it reflects a president desperate to shift the blame from his own failures, framing it as an authoritarian overreach that contradicts the Federal Reserve Act.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) emphasized Cook’s historic role, noting she is the first Black woman in this position and deserved to remain more than Trump deserved to remain in office. He pointed out the lack of credible evidence against Cook and criticized Trump’s characterizations.

Trump’s attempt to remove Cook comes after allegations by his ally, Bill Prute, head of the Federal Housing and Treasury Agency, accusing Cook of mortgage fraud related to two significant real estate properties. Trump had indicated last week that failure to resign would result in her dismissal.

In a letter, Trump claimed there “is a good reason” for her removal. Yet, Cook firmly responded that she would not step down and would continue her work to support the economy.

While the president does have the power to dismiss members of the Federal Reserve, it remains uncertain if the allegations against Cook meet the necessary legal threshold.
