Accusations Fly After Minneapolis School Shooting
A prominent Minnesotan representative has criticized Governor Tim Waltz, alleging that he’s not addressing crucial issues following a tragic shooting at a Catholic school in Minneapolis. The shooting, which occurred at the Announcement Catholic Church, left two children dead and several others injured.
The lawmaker, a Republican, stated, “Tim Waltz and his team aren’t trying to solve the problem; they’re making it worse.” He insisted that a serious conversation is needed among state Democrats about how to tackle mental health issues that he believes they have contributed to.
The shooter, identified as 23-year-old Robin Westman, opened fire during a mass. Officials noted that federal authorities indicated Westman, originally named Robert, was transgender. This has sparked a debate on social media and among public figures. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey urged against using the shooting to further divide the trans community.
In response to the unfolding situation, the Minnesota representative also criticized Democrats for pushing gun control measures. He argued that if access to guns were blocked, the perpetrator would have found another way to commit a crime. “It’s not the availability of the gun that’s the problem; it’s the mental health issues at play here,” he emphasized.
The tragic event has led to discussions about Walz’s policies that support trans individuals, which some critics view as inappropriate in light of the shooting. The representative questioned why the governor identifies the state as a “trans sanctuary” but doesn’t promote it as a refuge for all faiths.
Authorities reported that the shooter had expressed significant mental health struggles and exhibited hate towards various groups. Prior to the incident, Westman apparently lamented his trans identity and expressed distress over his situation.
In the aftermath, Governor Waltz expressed condolences for the victims and emphasized that schools should be safe places for children. He has yet to respond directly to the representative’s comments, despite reaching out for a reaction from his office. Waltz commented on the urgent need for children to learn in an environment filled with hope, rather than fear of violence.
As the community grapples with this tragedy, ongoing discussions about mental health, gun control, and social policies are likely to escalate.
