Mr. Bessent and Mr. Paulson are among several names that have been reported in the media in recent days as possible candidates for the role. The final decision rests with President Trump, and Reuters could not tell whether other candidates have been eliminated or are still in contention.
One of the two sources said the meeting with Bessent at Trump's Mar-a-Lago, Florida mansion was “very positive.”
It is unclear whether Mr. Paulson met or planned to meet with Mr. Trump.
