Tragic Accident Claims Lives of LSU Student and Fiancé
A heartbreaking incident in Louisiana has claimed the lives of 21-year-old Leah Fonte, a student at Louisiana State University, and her fiancé, firefighter Shane Hirstius. They were walking together along the side of a road early Sunday morning when a car struck them. This collision occurred at around 2:40 a.m. as they walked on the shoulder.
The Baton Rouge Police Department has reported that Leah and Shane were engaged and had been high school sweethearts. Authorities arrested 20-year-old Mia Dawson, who now faces multiple charges, including operating a vehicle while impaired, reckless driving, hit-and-run, vehicular homicide, and negligent injuring.
Tragically, Leah was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, while Shane was transported to the hospital, where he unfortunately died later.
The River Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, where Shane served as a firefighter, expressed their sorrow in a Facebook post, describing him as more than just a firefighter. They highlighted his immense heart, infectious smile, and genuine desire to help others.
According to the department, “He gave 110% of himself to his responsibilities as a first responder, always willing to step forward when someone needed help.” His commitment and compassion embodied the values of being a firefighter.
Leah was a senior at LSU, focusing her studies on biological sciences. The president of LSU, Wade Rousse, extended heartfelt condolences to Leah’s family, hoping they find comfort during this difficult time of grief and reflection.
