There are some mixed feelings about Apple’s upcoming device.
A functional model of Apple’s much-anticipated foldable phone, dubbed the iPhone Ultra, has been leaked and shared by the Canadian YouTube channel Unbox Therapy. This channel is known for giving sneak peeks at various tech products to its 26.5 million subscribers.
In the early preview, which has garnered over 1.9 million views, host Lewis Hilsenteger showcased what appears to be a Chinese mockup of the phone. This model reportedly folds in half along a hinge. The official iPhone Ultra is set to launch on September 9 during Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event.
Hilsenteger commented on the increasing accuracy of these leaks from China, noting that the prototypes look more like the finished products with each iteration.
The design of the iPhone Ultra resembles a passport, bearing similarities to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8.
It features a small external display and a larger internal screen that becomes visible when the device is opened.
While exact dimensions are still unannounced, Hilsenteger estimates that the cover display could measure about 5.5 inches, with the main screen potentially stretching to 7.8 inches, according to Tom’s Guide.
The video illustrates a camera with two lenses, and the placement of the volume buttons at the top of the device, which is a departure from the usual side positioning. Hilsenteger also anticipates additional buttons that might assist with operating the folding mechanism and capturing photos while closed.
Viewers noticed a prominent crease down the center of the prototype, which contradicts previous claims that the final product would have a smoother appearance.
Hilsenteger reassured viewers that the final product is unlikely to have such a noticeable crease.
However, opinions about the device were mixed. While some people humorously referred to it as the “iPhold,” others expressed skepticism.
“I really think Apple should consider skipping the folding design,” one commenter noted.
Another user expressed concerns, saying, “I hope folding phones don’t become the standard.”
A third user commented, “I wish it were taller when folded. I was really excited, but now I feel let down.”
Additionally, potential buyers criticized the expected hefty starting price of around $2,000.
One user lamented, “Phones are just getting pricier. They can cost more than PCs and laptops now.”
Another Reddit user declared the contemporary foldable smartphone visually unappealing and questioned its practicality, stating: “Nobody really wants a phablet in their pocket.”
Concern was echoed by yet another person simply stating, “I’m worried.”
Tech reporter Mark Gurman from Bloomberg questioned the need for this device, suggesting it’s more of a novelty than a necessity.
“You don’t really need a foldable iPhone,” he mentioned to a Tom’s Guide contributor. “It’s something you’d buy if you want it.”
Gurman expressed skepticism about spending over $2,000 for a phone that features an advanced hinge and can open to the size of an iPad, calling the device more of a “status symbol” than a genuine necessity—though it might turn into a target for jokes on platforms like TikTok due to its clunky design.
Though the product is scheduled for unveiling next week, some industry experts anticipate it could be unavailable for preorder until late 2026, possibly between October and December.
