Press Secretary Defends ICE Amid Heated Briefing
In a dynamic press briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt upheld the integrity of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) while engaging in a challenging exchange with journalist Niall Stanage from The Hill.
The tension arose when Stanage probed the administration regarding a recent law enforcement incident in Minneapolis. Rather than sidestepping the inquiry, Leavitt took the opportunity to criticize the question’s biased nature, labeling it as mere political maneuvering.
Stanage’s questions suggested misconduct and excessive force by ICE officers. He mentioned that 32 individuals passed away while in ICE custody last year, in addition to referring to a tragic incident where an ICE agent shot and killed a woman named Renee Good.
“Earlier you were defending ICE agents generally. Secretary [Kristi] Noem stated that ICE is doing ‘everything correctly.’ With how many lives were lost, how does that hold up?” Stanage challenged.
“What led to Renee Good’s tragic death?” Leavitt countered.
“An ICE agent acted recklessly and unjustly killed her,” he replied.
“So you’re a biased reporter with a left-wing perspective,” Leavitt responded sharply.
Stanage shot back, “What do you want me to do?”
“You’re a left-wing hack. It’s clear you’re not reporting; you’re posing as a journalist. You shouldn’t even be in that seat,” she asserted. “Your question confirms your bias,” she added.
Leavitt also referenced victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants, stressing the dangerous situations ICE agents navigate to protect American lives.
“Do you have statistics on how many citizens were harmed by illegal aliens who ICE is trying to deport? I doubt you do,” she challenged Stanage.
“Shame on individuals in the media who hold such a distorted and biased view,” she concluded.
The briefing followed a recent incident where Renee Good, 37, was shot by an ICE officer after a dangerous confrontation in Minneapolis. Good had pursued immigration officers and attempted to flee, leading to the altercation.
In another related occurrence, tensions flared in Minneapolis when an illegal immigrant attacked an ICE agent with a snow shovel, resulting in the assailant being shot in the leg.
